Human Rights - New York

Our work

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York (OHCHR-NY) serves as the “extended arm” of OHCHR headquarters based in Geneva, with substantive human rights responsibilities at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The greater part of the work of OHCHR-NY is to ensure the recognition of human rights in all areas of work of the United Nations Organization. In particular, it aims at ensuring that human rights standards and principles are increasingly integrated into the peace and security, development, and humanitarian work of the United Nations.

OHCHR-NY represents the High Commissioner for Human Rights in meetings and activities at the UN headquarters at all levels and in interactions with permanent missions of Member States, UN agencies and departments, civil society organisations and the media.

It also provides advice and support on human rights issues to the Office of the Secretary-General, the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and other inter-governmental, inter-departmental and inter-agency bodies and mechanisms.

As part of its outreach and public information activities, OHCHR-NY works with civil society organisations, academia and the media. The office organises the annual commemoration of Human Rights Day in New York as well as seminars, training, panel discussions and related events on human rights.
