GENEVA (19 September 2018) — The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights will meet in Geneva from 24 September to 12 October 2018 to review the following countries: Argentina, Cabo Verde, Germany, Mali, South Africa, and Turkmenistan.

The above are among the 169 States that have ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and so are required to be reviewed regularly by the Committee of 18 international independent experts. The Committee will also hear from NGOs and national human rights institutions.

The public meetings will be webcast at http://webtv.un.org/ and will take place in room XVI at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on the following schedule:

On Tuesday 9 October, the Committee will hold an all-day public discussion on the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and other provisions of the Covenant on the relationship between science and economic, social and cultural rights. The meeting will take place from 10:00 to 18:00 in room XVI at the Palais des Nations.

Background

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights monitors States parties’ adherence to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The Committee is made up of 18 members who are independent human rights experts drawn from around the world, who serve in their personal capacity and not as representatives of States parties. The Committee’s concluding observations are an independent assessment of States’ compliance with their human rights obligations under the treaty.
