COMMITTEE ON ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES

Elections for the Committee on Enforced Disappearances

The members of the CED must be “experts of high moral character and recognized competence in the field of human rights, who shall serve in their personal capacity and be independent and impartial”. They are elected by States parties to the Convention “according to equitable geographical distribution” and taking into account “the usefulness of the participation in the work of the CED, having relevant legal experience and of balanced gender representation” (art. 28, para. 1, ICPPED).

About the CED election process

Each State party may nominate one person from its own nationals to stand for election at a meeting of States parties. Members are elected for a term of four years and are eligible for re-election once.

States parties cast their votes by secret ballot from a list of nominees, with due consideration being given to the geographical distribution, relevant legal experience and gender representation of the candidates.
