UN Human Rights in IRAN (Islamic Republic of)


The Middle East and North Africa Section is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of the United Nations human rights mandate in Iran. This mandate encompasses monitoring and reporting on the situation of human rights in Iran, advocacy and technical cooperation. The issue of the administration of justice and the death penalty, particularly its application to child offenders, is one of the priority areas for OHCHR.

Based on its monitoring work, OHCHR engages with the Iranian authorities and in public advocacy to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights. As part of its mandate, OHCHR workds actively with a variety of actors, including United Nations entities, civil society organizations and Member States.

Furthermore, OHCHR engages with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including through cooperation and dialgue on human rights as well as through the provision of technical assistance in support of its engagement with international human rights mechanisms.

OHCHR also provides secretariat support to the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

OHCHR is a non-resident agency of the UNCT in Tehran.
